Prescription orthotics are devices that fit inside your shoes that have been made from a mold of your feet in order to correct for anatomical or mechanical (ergonomic) problems in your feet. They can be moved from shoe-to-shoe in order to maximize their effectiveness.
Dr. Shaw will evaluate your feet non weight-bearing, weight-bearing, and when walking to determine whether or not you need orthotics or if you are just wearing the wrong shoes for your feet. She will advise you on how to shop for running shoes after seeing what kind of feet you have.
Orthotics can help with many problems, including:
Fallen arches
Plantar fasciitis
Bunions
Morton's neuroma
Numbness or tingling
Ankle discomfort
Knee problems
Hip pain
Lower back pain
Dr. Shaw uses a foam cast molding box to take a non weight-bearing impression of your feet in a neutral position. The reason this technique is used is to bring out the neutral position of your foot, which also brings out the natural arch that you're supposed to have. These orthotics are made for you, and only you, just like a pair of prescription eyeglasses. They should last for many years unless your prescription changes, and Dr. Shaw will repair any damage to them for free for the first 2 years that you have them.
Most extended health care plans will reimburse you for the cost of your orthotics when prescribed by a Doctor of Chiropractic because it is part of our training at Chiropractic College to diagnose and treat conditions of the feet that are of musculo-skeletal origin. Please check the fine print of your extended health care plan to see what your personal coverage is.
